Become a Member

There are three classes of members in the Society: regular members, emeritus members and student members.

Regular Members:
Anyone who holds a Bachelor Degree or its equivalent from a recognized university, and over a period of at least three years subsequent to graduation has:

  1. conducted research in nutrition;
  2. taught nutrition in a recognized institution; or
  3. otherwise been engaged in a responsible capacity in the application of scientific knowledge of nutrition, may apply for regular membership.

Regular Members may attend as well as vote at business meetings of the Society, may stand for election to the Board of Directors or to an office of the Society, may sponsor the participation of non-members at scientific meetings and may sponsor papers for presentation at the meetings of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies.

Emeritus members:
A regular member in good standing for five or more years, who has retired by reason of age or ill health from employment or from active work directly related to the purposes of the Society, shall be eligible for emeritus membership. An emeritus member shall have the same rights as an regular member.

Student Members:
Any person who holds a Bachelor Degree or its equivalent from a recognized university, and who is registered in a full-time programme of nutritionally orientated study leading to a Graduate Degree or a diploma from a recognized university shall be eligible for student membership. For a student registered in other than a Ph.D. programme, the period of membership may be extended for up to three years after graduation from the program, provided that the individual is engaged in activities consistent with the objects of the Society. Student members shall not have the right to vote at business meetings of the Society; to stand for election to the board of Directors or to an office of the Society; to be eligible for Chairmanship of a Committee; and to sponsor papers for presentation at meetings of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies.

Election of Members
A person shall be elected as Emeritus Member of the Society by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors.

Upon receipt of an application for Regular or Student membership, and confirmation of the qualification for membership of that applicant, the secretary shall place the name of that applicant upon a ballot. The ballots containing nominations for Student and for Regular membership shall be circulated periodically by the Secretary to the members of the Board of Directors. The candidate shall be elected to Regular or Student membership by a three-quarters majority of the members of the Board of Directors in respect of that candidate. Immediately following an election, the candidate shall be notified by the Secretary of the decision of the Board of Directors.

Resignation of Members
Any member may withdraw from membership at any time by giving notice in writing to the Directors (sent to the Secretary) and the withdrawal shall be effective from the date fixed in such notice for withdrawal, but such withdrawal shall not relieve such member from any liability to the Society for dues or assessments then due and outstanding, and without limiting the generality of the foregoing, any other assessment or financial obligation incurred by such member to the Society.

Transferability of Membership
Membership is not transferable under any circumstances.

Membership fees and fiscal year
Each regular, emeritus and student member shall pay to the Society such membership fees, calculated on such a basis, as shall be determined from time to time by a majority vote at each Annual General Meeting after consideration of a recommendation by the Treasurer. Separate levels of fees may be set for regular, emeritus and for student members.

Each regular, emeritus and student member shall pay the levies set by the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies, unless exempt by virtue of payment of the levy through another constituent society, and the levy set by any other organizations of which the Society may be a member. Failure of a regular, emeritus or student member to pay any of these levies shall be considered as a failure to pay Society fees and shall result in the same penalty expressed hereafter.

The said membership fees shall be paid to the Society on or before January 31st of each year, or on or before such other date as may be determined by resolution of the Annual General Meeting from time to time.

No member may vote either in person or by proxy at any meeting nor may he stand for election to the Board of Directors or to any office of the Society unless all fees currently payable by him in respect of his membership in the Society have been paid in full.

Members in arrears of fees for two years and having been notified of their arrears by the Treasurer, shall be deleted from the membership list. Former members may be reinstated by a majority vote of the Board of Directors upon payment of their arrears and fees for the current fiscal year.
